He also made trips to isolated locations where a bullock cart was the only mode of transportation to provide high-quality medical care right to the door step of poor patients. He is a shining embodiment of our philosophy, “live to serve,” having laboured to the very end and left for his heavenly abode on March 20, 1996, leaving a legacy for the coming generations.
He played a key role in delivering scientific remedies for a variety of deadly snake bites, insect bites, and unidentified bites. He popularised secure institutional deliveries during a time when residential deliveries were common.
Upon graduating, he observed that Melur lacked adequate medical facilities and decided to settle down to practice medicine. In 1951, he opened a modest clinic and began providing services to the general public.
He was born to an ayurvedic doctor in Mangalore, which was then under the presidency of Madras. Following his graduation from his hometown’s schools, he was accepted to Madras Medical College to pursue an MBBS.
He played a key role in building a robust and coherent Indian Medical Association chapter at Melur, which served as a venue for continuing medical education seminars, realising the need for a forum to address the grievances of doctors in the community. At IMA Melur, the monthly CME sessions that were initiated by Dr. M.B.S. Krishnan remain a tradition today. Despite being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease at a young age, Dr. M.B.S. Krishnan continued to follow his father’s footsteps and served society as a top physician till his untimely passing on November 12, 2016.
Dr. M.B.S. Krishnan was born in Melur as the fourth of five sons of Dr. M.B. Srinivasa Rao and Padmavati Rao. demonstrated a strong interest in mathematics and Tamil literature while in school. Following graduation, he intended to pursue Tamil literature for his postgraduate studies and eventually become a Tamil teacher.
However, he realised the importance of continuing to serve the underprivileged residents of Melur and the surrounding villages because of his father’s persuasiveness. He therefore enrolled in Madurai Medical College’s MBBS programme (batch 1971–1976). He instantly joined his father in serving the public after completing his MBBS.
As the director of Dr. Rao’s Service Hospital, he made sure that all of his patients received the best care available since he had a deep interest in medical innovations. He kept himself updated about new developments at all times. In order to take care of his patients in the event that they need advanced care not provided by Melur, he established a strong network of doctors, surgeons, and specialists who were hand-picked for their specialisation in their respective fields.
Following the sudden death of his father, Dr. M.B.S. Krishnan, in 2016, Dr. Bharath Krishnan assumed leadership of Dr. Rao’s Service Hospital as Medical Director. Since then, he has been putting in a lot of effort to expand the range of services, provide individuals with cutting-edge medicines, and provide access to high-quality healthcare in the most underserved segments of society.
In 2015, Dr. Bharath made his way back to Melur and took a position as the Head of the Critical Care Department at Velammal Medical College. He played a crucial role in transforming the department from a basic 30-bed unit to a highly efficient 120-bed unit that provides high-quality care.
